1. The Piña Colada

Starting with a vastly popular drink is the Piña Colada. This was developed in the 1920s and became widely recognised in the 1950s – 60s, becoming the national drink of Puerto Rico. Three bartenders have disputed the ownership, making the creation story clouded.

This drink has become a pinnacle of coconut cocktails and is a concoction of white rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. It is shaken and offers a creamy, smooth, and fruity palette.

Today, it has many variations, some using disarano instead of rum, and is widely regarded as a summer drink. Refreshing under the beating heat.

2. Bushwacker Drink

The Bushwacker Drink has a blended profile of coffee, chocolate, and coconut. An unconventional addition to the list of coconut cocktails.

Localised and widely popular in the state of Florida and the Virgin Islands, the Bushwacker Drink was developed in 1975 at the Ship’s Store Sandshaker Lounge in Florida and was inspired by a similar drink from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

This addition to coconut cocktails uses dark rum, coffee liquor, chocolate liquor, coconut cream, and heavy cream. It comes topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. This is often seen as a dessert drink and used as a vacation treat rather than for casual drinking.

3. Malibu Sunset

A variation of the Tequila Sunrise, the Malibu Sunset is a tropical addition to coconut cocktails. The Tequila Sunrise was originally circulated in the 1930s/40s and originally used the ingredients tequila, crème de cassis, lime, and soda.

Using coconut flavoured Malibu rum, pineapple juice, grenadine, and an optional addition of orange juice. This coconut drink is perfect for those beach days, events, and summer parties. With low alcohol content and a sweet and fruity palate, it is a wonderful twist to the normal tequila drink.

4. Coconut Gimlet

The Coconut Gimlet is a creamy variation of the regular Gimlet (gin and lime) and a perfect lineup in the list of coconut cocktails.

The original Gimlet was developed in the late 19th century/ early 20th century and was used by British Navy officers to prevent scurvy – thanks to the lime juice!

The Coconut Gimlet is a tropical twist and offers the same elegance as the regular version, used in summer evening parties and welcomed at classier events. Using Gin, lime juice, coconut cream, simple syrup, and served in a martini glass, this elegant cocktail brings a tropical twist, perfect for all occasions.

5. Coconut Margarita

The Coconut Margarita is a contemporary twist on the traditional Margarita and offers a smooth and refreshing coconut taste with a tangy twist.

The original Margarita was developed in the 1930s – 40s and has a sharp taste from lime and tequila. These variations add coconut cream to offer a smooth twist; the emergence isn’t tied to a specific place, however, likely emerged from coastal resorts looking to blend the Mexican drink with their Caribbean heritage.
