To celebrate this wonderful international day of lovers of Gin and Tonic all over the world, here’s a brief history of the beginnings of the iconic drink and why it’s such a popular cocktail today.
The beginning of Gin
Gin is thought to have been discovered by Dr.Slyvius in Holland way back in the 16th century. It was first used as a medication to improve circulation, but after making its way to the UK, it quickly became a much-loved gentleman’s drink. The G&T’s popularity grew fast and soon started the 1750 ‘Gin Craze’.
Legend has it that Londoners drank over 11 million gallons of the good stuff in 1750 alone. This Gin obsession meant that slowly, Gin shops started to take over the streets and eventually forced ‘The Gin Act’ to come into play. This aimed to reduce the amount of Gin consumption across the country, but instead, Brits started to sell the sweeter but illegal ‘Old Tom Gin’ in an effort to salvage their much-loved drink. Realising taking Gin away from Londoners was backfiring, Dry London Gin was created. This was a cleaner, safer, and higher quality Gin and it’s what we know and love today.
The rise of Tonic
Surprisingly, Tonic also started out as a medical drink that was used to treat Malaria in India. The drug administered, known as Quinine, was often mixed with sugar and water to make a better-tasting medicine. This is the Indian Tonic Water we know today.
Once it was discovered that the two mixed together made a Gin taste even better, the popularity of the combination grew and started a worldwide love for Gin and Tonic.
Still loved after 170+ years
Unlike most trends and crazes, people’s love for Gin and Tonic stayed and only grew larger, and remains one of the most popular cocktails across the world. Today, many people love the G+T as they claim it takes the best part of two drinks and creates one fabulous one. With a bitter taste and a splash of sweetness, they complement each other perfectly to create a taste that never gets old. Here at Beyond Bar Hire, we couldn’t agree more!
Gin and Tonic has come a long way since it was first popularised. Now, there are many different flavours and ways to create the cocktail to suit everybody’s preferred taste.
Among some of the most popular include London Dry Gin, Old Navy Gin, and New Western Gin. Through our dry Gin bar hire, Beyond Bar Hire have discovered that Gordons Gin, Bombay Sapphire and Ginebra San Miguel are also quickly becoming the go-to for Gin selection, with Aviation and Copper House being our personal favourites!
We love Gin so much, Beyond Bar Hire will be having a ‘Spotlight Gin’ at each event we do!
G+T’s now have a range of different ways to make and mix them to create a desired taste with a twist. The ‘Tonic Delight’ allows for a peachy undertone while the ‘Guilty Pleasure’ is mixed with mint and dark chocolate. The ‘Too Cool’ infuses cucumber to create a refreshed, one-of-a-kind taste. There are now hundreds of possibilities when it comes to Gin and Tonic and flavour, and we are 100% here for it.
